The MAF sensor delete service is one of the most preferred ECU remapping solutions. The reason is that the MAF sensor is a key vehicle component but it is also a very problematic one.

Firstly, we will talk about what is a MAF sensor and how it works. After that, we will show you what are the common problems and symptoms of a faulty MAF sensor. In the end, we will explain the MAF sensor delete process with all of its advantages. Let’s start!

What is the MAF sensor?

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is a really important component of your vehicle’s electronic fuel injection system. The MAF sensor is located between the intake manifold and the air filter of the engine of your vehicle. In most modern vehicles, there is an IAT sensor (intake air temperature sensor). It is installed in the MAF sensor. There are various types of airflow sensors, but many vehicles use the most common type called hot-wire.

The main purpose of the mass airflow sensor is to measure and determine what amount and density of air enter the airflow or the engine and to pass the information to the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). That way the ECU is able to balance the amount of fuel delivered to the engine. Let’s see how the MAF sensor works!

What does the MAF sensor do?

If you are considering having your vehicle’s MAF sensor deleted through the ECU, it is important to understand how it actually works, first!

As we said above, the basic purpose of the MAF sensor is to help your vehicle to release the amount of fuel needed into the engine in order to run properly. Here we will explain how it is possible.

The hot-wire mass airflow sensor has two small wires – one is electrically heated and the other is not. There is also a temperature sensor located close to the hot wire. Its aim is to measure the temperature of the air around the heated wire.

The electric current needed is more when there are more air flows over the wire. For example, when the engine is idling, there is a small amount of airflow near the heated wire. This means that a very low electric current is needed so the wire will be kept hot. And the opposite – when there is more airflow, it will cool down the wire, so more electric current is needed.

The temperature sensor calculates how much electric current is needed so the heated wire is 200 ℉ hotter than the cold wire. It translated this information into a digital signal to send it to the engine computer. The MAF sensor decides when to increase or decrease the electric current, so the ECU can understand how much fuel to inject. The main aim is to keep an optimal air/fuel ratio level.

Typical MAF sensor problems

Problems with the MAF sensor are typical for many vehicles and the sensor usually gets damaged or contaminated. When the MAF sensor is dirty or broken, the vehicle still can run. But it would not work efficiently and there is a huge risk of serious mechanical engine damage. Here are some of the typical MAF sensor failure problems:

  • MAF sensor not sending any airflow data to the ECU
  • MAF sensor sending faulty information to the ECU
  • ECU not able to control fuel properly
  • Not idling or idling roughly engine
  • Consistently lean or rich condition, etc.

Symptoms of a bad or faulty MAF sensor:

  • A change in fuel consumption
  • Hard engine start or turn over
  • Stalling engine shortly after starting
  • Engine dragging while under load or idle
  • Rich or lean idling
  • Black smoke out of the exhaust pipe
  • Less power
  • Poor acceleration
  • Check Engine or Service Engine Soon lights on

MAF Sensor Delete (MAF off / MAF removal) – why and when?

If you notice some of those symptoms, we recommend to you the MAF sensor delete (MAF off / MAF removal)!

The MAF sensor delete, also called MAF removal or MAF off is usually required on highly upgraded vehicles. The reason is that the amount of air passing through the mass airflow sensor causes burnout or hitting its maximum. And as we mentioned above, a damaged MAF sensor causes limp mode and degradation of the engine overall performance.

We, at Effective Tuning, can carry out a MAF sensor delete (MAF off / MAF removal) service. That way we will disable the mass airflow sensor function, so your vehicle’s engine will be able to run in a MAFless condition. In this mode, your vehicle’s smart ECU will estimate the data needed and will continue working properly and even better without the MAF sensor.

Benefits of MAF sensor delete (MAF removal / MAF off)

The benefits of MAF sensor delete (MAF removal / MAF off) are so many, but here are some of them:

  • Better fuel mileage
  • Better throttle response
  • Improved engine performance
  • No more faulty information
  • Better fuel economy
  • More power
  • Improved acceleration
  • No more check engine lights on, etc.

If you are wondering when it is the best time for the MAF sensor delete (MAF removal / MAF off)… Well, whenever you notice rough engine working, fuel mixture issues or any other symptoms of faulty MAF sensor… Then it is the right time for the MAF sensor delete. In addition, MAF sensor delete / removal is a great option when you need to clean or replace the MAF sensor.
