When we talk about upgrading the vehicle performance, one of the most wanted ECU tuning services is the EGR delete. In diesel engines, the EGR system (exhaust gas recirculation) is one of the most important but also the most problematic elements.

Read our article to learn more about the EGR valve and cooler, how do they work and how an EGR delete can benefit your vehicle’s power and performance:

What is an EGR Valve?

The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) is a device situated in the exhaust system. It is created to control and reduce the NOx emissions (nitrous emissions) from vehicles. In addition, the EGR valve is related to the Euro Emission Regulations as an effort to reduce air pollution. Actually, the EGR valve reduces engine efficiency. That, in turn, means that the engine needs to burn more fuel to generate more power. So, that leads to an increase in air pollution. That is why many drivers choose an EGR delete solution.

How does the EGR valve work?

There is an internal and an external exhaust gas recirculation. The EGR valve recirculates a measured amount of the burnt gases by creating a loopback from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold. The EGR valve is controlled by a solenoid that, in turn, is managed by the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). The ECU uses a duty request cycle, so it opens the valve when is needed and the recirculation starts. In addition, the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor reports the amount of additional gas.

What is an EGR cooler?

The role of the EGR cooler is to lower the temperature of the burnt gases before they are recirculated back into the engine. The idea is the inlet air temperatures to be kept as low as possible. Otherwise, that can lead to coolant loss. Some engines have solenoids and flaps on the EGR coolers that play the role of sensors to monitor how it works. If they fail, that can also lead to fault codes and warnings.

Problems, symptoms and fault codes of EGR valve

What is the most problematic thing in the EGR valve?

Let’s start with the main EGR valve problems! The exhaust gases naturally have high soot content. When those gases are constantly being recirculated through the engine, they cause a build-up of carbon deposits in the intake manifold and around the EGR valve area. That in many cases leads to EGR valve sticking in different positions.

For example, the EGR valve should be closed, so the turbo system can pressurize for perfect performance. But if there is a problem with the EGR valve, it can cause an open loop environment for the turbo and big reductions in fuel economy and power. In other words, the build-up with carbon deposits, also called clogged EGR valve, often causes EGR valve failure and costly repairs. There are many symptoms and fault codes that mean a faulty or blocked EGR valve or cooler.

How to understand something is not okay – symptoms?

Some of the EGR valve fault symptoms are the reduced throttle response, the loss of power, the lower fuel consumption and the limp mode. There are some fault symptoms that show a problem with the EGR cooler as white smoke, loss of coolant and low power. If you see the engine management light or the flashing glow plug light, it is a warning that something is not okay with the EGR valve or cooler.

EGR delete / EGR off / EGR removal

We, from Effective Tuning, offer the best EGR delete (EGR off / EGR removal) service. We delete the EGR system from the vehicle’s ECU (engine control unit) by reprogramming it. You send to us your original engine file and our team removes the EGR functionality from it. When your vehicle’s file is ready, we send to you an e-mail message with the tuned files. All you need to do is to download it and load it back into the ECU. That’s all!

After the EGR delete, your vehicle will function as it has an EGR – without error messages, emissions workshop light or engine indicator light lighting up.

Benefits of EGR delete

There are many benefits and advantages of the EGR delete / EGR off via ECU remapping. Here are some of the key differences that you will notice after having your EGR deleted:

  • More engine power and MPG (the EGR valve will not limit the engine performance and efficiency anymore)
  • Increased fuel economy (the engine will burn less fuel to deliver the same amount of power)
  • Lowered engine temps and improved throttle response
  • Cleaner emissions (because a faulty EGR system creates more carbon deposits)
  • Preventing from DPF (diesel particulate filter) failure
  • Preventing from costly EGR replacement
  • Longer lifespan and saved money (reduced carbon and soot deposits that cause engine failure and costly repairs)

Effective Tuning’s EGR delete

Effective Tuning is a world leader in EGR delete and EGR off. We can correctly remove the EGR functionality via reprogramming the ECU in order to remove the EGR valve problems and faults. The EGR system has to be properly disabled, so it can not recirculate burnt gases while it still physically works in the engine.

If you want to upgrade your vehicle’s performance, you should invest in a professional EGR delete (EGR off). Are you interested in learning more about our EGR delete service? Want to know if we can remap your vehicle model? Contact us for more information or check our services here.
